The aufruf is a communal acknowledgment of an upcoming jewish wedding. For these reasons, we have chosen to have an aufruf. Since in many communities the bride and groom do not see each other for the week before the wedding, the bride is generally not present at an aufruf, although sometimes her family members do attend. Following the aliyah, the congregation celebrates the couple with singing and a showering of candy.
